With HIV/Aids and tuberculosis contributing enormously to the disease burden in the Western Cape Province, a research grouping focussing on priority infectious diseases was formed in 2000 within the School of Public Health and Family Medicine.

The Infectious Diseases Epidemiology Unit is involved in a wide range of interdisciplinary research and teaching activities spanning surveillance, HIV-prevention clinical trials, clinical epidemiology of tuberculosis and HIV therapy, socio-behavioural and health systems research.

The Unit is actively involved in service provision in collaboration with the Provincial Government of the Western Cape as well as with Médecins Sans Frontières.
